Beacon drive only for city?

THE DRIVE against hooters and beacons fitted on vehicles seems to be focused within the city only. There are scores of jeeps and cars coming from surrounding districts through either Kanpur road and Rae Bareli road that remain a nuisance with the traffic policemen just watching them pass by without taking any action on the two busy highways. These cars and jeeps breeze through the VIP road with no checking done by policemen either in the morning or late night hours.

?NTPC profiteering? bleeds UPPCL

IF ITS representations to various bodies in Delhi are taken on face value, a funds-starved UP Power Corporation Ltd (UPPCL) seems to be paying through its nose for the electricity it purchases from the National Thermal Power Corporation. The NTPC not only recovers the full cost of power it supplies to the UPPCL, but also earns handsome return on its equity.

POWER POLITICS

The Big Fight between the State and the Centre over the issue of power supply turns bloodier with each passing day. And surely, the Mulayam Singh Yadav Government?s decision to bring Rae Bareli (Sonia Gandhi?s constituency) under regular load shedding ? a day after the Congress chief gave a humiliating defeat to all other political parties in the just concluded Lok Sabha bye-election ? will only add fuel to the fire being generated by the Centre-State collision.

Power supply: Centre-state spat hots up

THE CENTRE-STATE spat over power supply is getting hotter even as the people reel under acute and prolonged blackouts throughout Uttar Pradesh. While the Centre has warned UP not to draw electricity from the Northern Grid more than its quota when the grid frequency is low, the latter argues that it is not getting its full quota of electricity from the Central sector power houses and, hence, it was forced to overdraw to meet its requirements.

Centre to UP: Fend for yourself

IN WHAT may kick start a new round of blame game, the Congress led UPA Government at the Centre has outrightly rejected Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav?s demand for 1,000 MW of additional electricity from the Central pool. On the contrary, the Centre has attributed the power shortage in the State to UP?s failure to set up new powerhouses and modernise the existing ones, contain power theft and effectively implement the Centre-funded schemes.

Hardcore drug peddlers push for a softer law

GUESS WHO is clamouring for an anti-drug law to be made more lenient? Drug peddlers lodged in Lucknow and Barabanki district jails! Perhaps, if they had their way, murderers should be let off with mild punishment. Ditto for other criminals. All this is not good news for a State whose minister was recently caught on camera accepting his involvement in the narcotics trade.

PCL centralised system draws CAG flak

OVER NINE months ago, the UP Power Corporation Ltd (UPPCL) replaced the decentralised system of material purchase with the centralized one. The HT had then smelled a rat and published a report quoting sources that alleged that it was mainly the charm of hundreds of crores of rupees being doled out by the Centre under the Rajiv Gandhi Rural Electrification programme that had led the officials to centralise the system denying any role in awarding contracts etc., to the subsidiary power companies.
