Green cover at PU remains in chokehold of concrete

Despite the orders of the municipal corporation against concreting of pavements around trees, there are hundreds of trees at Panjab University (PU) that continue to remain choked by solid structures. PU has claimed that it has increased its green cover around the campus, but concrete around the trees is a common site at the varsity.

Concreting the space around trees leaves no breathing space, putting the life of trees under threat. The guidelines of the ministry of urban development state that a minimum area of 1.25 x 1.25 metre around the trees should be left uncemented.(HT PHOTO)

For Panjab University, Urdu is a foreign language

Despite Urdu being one of the official languages of India, Panjab University (PU) plans on merging the department of Urdu with the school of foreign languages. A committee constituted by vice-chancellor professor Raj Kumar has proposed that Urdu be merged with French, German, Russian, Tibetan and Chinese departments to form a school of foreign languages.

Egg business takes a hit in Punjab, suppliers await normalcy in Valley

According to the egg suppliers, about 30 trucks used to carry eggs from Punjab to Kashmir Valley on daily basis, predominantly from Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Sangrur districts.

As restrictions in the Valley continued for the fourth consecutive day, egg business in the state has come to a standstill as local suppliers have not been able to transport even a single truck of eggs to Kashmir since August 5.
