Sharjeel Imam hearing: Delhi court issues summons to DCP

A Delhi court has issued summons to the deputy commissioner of police (crime) to appear before the court in the bail application of Sharjeel Imam in a sedition case. The court has listed the matter for December 9. The court observed that the absence of the special public prosecutor is causing witnesses to be discharged without examination. Sharjeel had sought bail under section 436A of CrPC in the case filed against him for allegedly making inflammatory speeches during the anti-CAA protests.

The court found the accused guilty of murder & awarded life imprisonment to them under sections 302 & 34 of the IPC & sections under the MCOCA.

The court refused to grant the death penalty to the accused observing that the act does not fall within the category of “rarest of rare”.

Court convicts 4 for 2008 murder that rocked Delhi

A Delhi court has convicted four people for the murder of journalist Soumya Vishwanathan 15 years ago. A fifth person was convicted for receiving stolen property and conspiring to facilitate organized crime. Vishwanathan was shot dead in her car in 2008, which sparked outrage and protests in Delhi. The convicted individuals may face a maximum sentence of the death penalty. The sentencing will take place on October 26.

NE Delhi riots: Court pulls up prosecutor

A Delhi court has reprimanded a special public prosecutor for throwing a file and behaving aggressively during a hearing in a 2020 Delhi riots case. The court has referred the matter to the Delhi Police Commissioner and the District and Sessions Judge and warned the prosecutor to be more careful in maintaining the court's decorum.

Former steel ministry official jailed for three years in coal scam

Former executive secretary of the joint plant commission of the Union ministry of steel, GK Basak, has been sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment and fined ₹5 lakh in a coal block allocation case. The court also gave Basak the benefit of setting off the period he had already undergone in detention. This is the 14th conviction in the coal allocation scam.
