Health risk @ 8 quacks a day

THE HEALTH Department official survey reported just 224 quacks in the city back in 2004. But, now their number has increased to at least 6000. Well, that means Lucknow approximately gets eight quacks every day. By, the time the Health Department wakes up to curb quack population, the city would have more quackery to deal with. The Health Department had lodged FIRs against 66 out of 224 in 2004. But, after sometime health sleuths? drive lost the sting. The statewide survey by the health department identified 27,252 quacks working in UP but action was mooted only against 1993.

Prove-?em-mad, a deeper racket!

PSYCHIATRISTS PLAYING foul to mint money and help customers get legal hold over property by proving the owner insane, is just a tip of the iceberg. There could be many angles to the crazy story, which smells of a deeper nexus than what Wasiha-Amrina case throws up.

Make no bones about it!

HOW MANY bones does your body have? If you say ?205?, you are one short of the magic figure of 206, considered standard for most adults. As for the missing bone, you can blame it on the ?Craniovertebral Junction Anomaly.? It is a rare congenital deformity among humans who live absolutely normal lives, even though the first bone in their vertebrae is absent. They rarely come to know about the missing bone.

Bird flu: No ducking this

WANT TO keep off chicken after the bird flu outbreak in Maharashtra? Wait till you hear about domestic ducks. They are silent reservoirs of a highly ?pathogenic? or lethal virus. Worse, they show no signs of illness themselves, but transmit the virus to other birds. All this puts a spanner in efforts to control any outbreak.

Forget filaria, it?s time to sleep

WHEN DOCTORS reached Harduiya village in Gangaganj development block at 9 pm, closed doors and reluctance greeted them. The place is just 30 km from the city. Though anxious eyes peeped out of windows, they were unwilling to leave cozy huts, even for their own benefit. Villagers preferred to sleep instead of participating in ?night blood sampling? to get their microfilaria level checked. The Health Department is conducting sampling of blood as part of Mass Drug Administration (MDA) programme against filaria, scheduled on January 8.
