Security guards trained at Jahan Khelan in great demand

The Punjab Security Training Institute at Police Recruits Training Centre (PRTC), Jahan Khelan, has become a source of skilled security guards for public and private sector companies. Started in 2008, it has churned out more than 5,000 trained security personnel, including about 300 female security guards and all have been employed.

Woman tests positive for swine flu in Hoshiarpur

A 50- year-old woman of Makhsoospur village in district's Mahilpur block has been diagnosed with swine flu. Laxmi Devi was admitted to the civil hospital here on February 15 with symptoms of cough and high fever. Her nasal smear was sent for an examination to PGI Chandigarh the same day.

The Punjab and Haryana high court recently issued a notice to the state director general of police (DGP) warning of contempt proceedings for failing to comply with Supreme Court's orders to check vehicles with black films. However, buses and other vehicles keep plying with black glasses, at least in Hoshiarpur.

Amid the nationwide clamour for fast-tracking rape cases, the court of additional sessions judge JS Bhinder disposed of a rape case within eight days of production of the challan. The convict, Jai Parkash Divedi, alias Pawan Dubey, a resident of Ambala Shri Duar (Uttar Pradesh), has been awarded 10-year imprisonment. Two co-accused have been acquitted.

40-yr-old attacked in Hoshiarpur, succumbs to injuries

Purshottam Lal, 40, a resident of Hariana died after being seriously injured in an attack by 15-20 goons in his house late Saturday night. His wife Neelam told the police that Taranjit Singh alias Mahant of Bhulana village and his cohorts barged in to their house around 10 pm and inflicted serious injuries to her husband with sharp-edged weapons.

Leopard strays into Hoshiarpur colony

A leopard which had sneaked in to the canal colony here in the wee hours of Friday, kept the wildlife officials on tenterhooks the whole day. The big cat could not be trapped till late in the evening.An expert was called from Chandigarh to calm the animal but it remained untraceable due to wild growth on the vacant plot it had hidden in.

Sarpanch booked for fraud in Tanda

The sitting sarpanch of village Bains Awan in Tanda block has been booked for fraudulently drawing old age pension by misrepresenting his age. Gurmit Singh, whose age, as per his birth certificate, is 53 years, has been getting pension since 2008. The matter came to light when some panches made a complaint to the deputy commissioner.
