Delhi: At Jahangirpuri, residents hope for return to normal as gates reopen

The locality has been tense since April 16, when clashes between Hindu and Muslim groups left nine people — eight police personnel and one civilian —injured. An anti-encroachment drive by the North MCD on Wednesday destroyed several structures in the area, leaving many without a source of income.

Drinking water scarce, debris chokes drains in Jahangirpuri

Residents complained debris from Wednesday’s anti-encroachment drive has blocked the main drain along the road, causing the drain water to spill out on the streets. The drainage has also entered some houses located at the road level.

Delhi: At Jahangirpuri, residents left to pick up pieces amid curbs

Several people in the area said they lost their livelihoods with the North Delhi Municipal Corporation’s (North MCD) drive the previous day either damaging or destroying their pushcarts or temporary stalls.

A north MCD official, who was part of Wednesday’s drive, said that they could not have stopped the drive simply based on the news about the top court’s relief. “We need an official order court for such drives to be stopped. No formal communication was given to us or our seniors.”

Most of violence-hit in Delhi's Jahangirpuri stays indoors as cops keep watch

Delhi Police commissioner Rakesh Asthana on Monday said that 23 people have been arrested so far in connection with the incident, and those involved in the clashes will not be spared.

A few shops opened on Monday with nearly 500 police personnel and six companies of additional force being deployed in the area.

Nerves frayed in tense Jahangirpuri

There was a sense of tension and fear in the area, with doors of houses closed and shutters of shops downed although some residents were out to survey the scene marked by broken glass, bricks and stones, damaged cars and a burnt scooter. Police barricaded the road as a security measure.

Cop shot, 7 injured as groups clash in Delhi

5-year-old boy, his grandfather killed in accident in Delhi’s Dwarka

The police identified the deceased as Vidit Kumar, a Class 1 student and the injured as Prem Prakash, 59, a Delhi Transport Corporation employee, who also suffered head injuries and is admitted to the hospital.

On Thursday evening, the police said that they have apprehended a juvenile who was riding the bike that was involved in the accident.

Meat shops in Delhi shut over fears of vandalism

SDMC mayor Mukesh Suryan on Monday evening said that he has written to the civic body’s commissioner to shut all meat shops in the corporation’s jurisdiction during the nine-day Hindu festival as it “hurt the religious sentiments” of people who fast and avoid eating non-vegetarian food and some spices.
