The three Cs to resolve our poverty of attention

We live in an age of magical technology; but it is leaving us burnt out. Separating the digital environments for our Create, Curate and Communicate modes can help rediscover peace in the digital world

Many people try to get around this by separating their digital lives into work and personal. But these boundaries don’t really help us in controlling our attention. (Shutterstock)

How to vaccinate a billion people

India’s current vaccine set-up may not be enough. But the Aadhaar experience can help

India has a long and accomplished history of immunisation. But that infrastructure can’t be used because the immunisation that is now required — over one billion, possibly two billion, vaccinations in less than two years — is very different in speed and scale to the current system(REUTERS)

State-run banks must be privatised | Nandan Nilekani

Technological disruption has made it even more critical for State-owned banks to shape up. The failure of audit controls in the Nirav Modi case or NPAs also demonstrates how not just transactional banking, but even audit that needs a technological reimagining

By divesting from public sector banks, and yet devising a way to keep the upside of their future growth, the exchequer can still capture the value that is inexorably being eroded from these banks(Hemant Mishra/Mint)

Why Aadhaar infrastructure should be opened up for private innovation

There is very little motivation to improve the infrastructure when it only serves the poor who do not have a voice. Universal access and usage is needed to keep public service providers on their toes, as supporters and critics will be vocal about their demand from the infrastructure.

Aadhaar has always been thought of as universal digital infrastructure, not just a scheme.(Pradeep Gaur/Mint)

How to make businesses GST compliant? Make GST business compliant

The GST system has enrolled close to 10 million businesses onto a single national technology backbone, the GSTN, and already collected over Rs 3 lakh crores in taxes in less than 6 months. GST was welcomed because it aimed at creating an incentive for compliance, rather than punishment for non-compliance

Aadhaar is an evolving endeavour, UIDAI responsive to public concerns | By Nandan Nilekani

As the usage of Aadhaar grows, there has been concern a unique identifier such as Aadhaar being seeded in multiple databases opens up the possibility of deep profiling and tracking. These fears are over-hyped and baseless.

What delights me the most though is that the Aadhaar architecture is flexible. We should applaud the UIDAI for being responsive to the concerns of the public.(Hindustan Times)

Five ways FasTag can help solve Delhi’s vehicular problem

If used smartly, the FasTag, a radio-frequency identification tag attached to each car, can bring about a revolution in solving many of the vehicular problems Delhi and other cities in India are currently facing

FasTags can implement congestion pricing. This is a model perfected by London and Singapore. Delhi, especially, with the subcontinent’s most extensive metro network, and yet the 3rd highest density of cars (424 cars per 1,000 people), needs congestion pricing. The pricing itself can be dynamic to affect demand(AP)

A young population and its ambitions can either build cities or bring them down, depending on how their energy is channelled. India’s youngsters are straining at the doors closed to them, and one way or another, the wood will give way. Nandan Nilekani writes.

Getting rid of our phantoms

Identity systems linked up with an IT-enabled process that interlinks our various departments would, besides making citizen information and identity more verifiable, make the relationship between the State and the citizen infinitely less traumatising, writes Nandan Nilekani.
