28% of students in 83 govt schools flunk Class-9 exams
Failure of Class 9 students in city government schools have disappointed the education department as around 3,755 students of 83 schools have failed to clear the exams. Though few schools are yet to submit their results to the education department, the results are likely to generate more discouraging figures from the city students.

Applications from VIPs make it tough for schools to control enrolments
The implementation of the new education policy by the UT education department to restrict the increasing number of enrolments in government schools does not seem to be an easy job. The policy, which aimed to enrol students according to the RTE guidelines that state that there should not be more than 40 students in a section, is faced with applications from VIPs to admit their wards in the schools, affecting the strength in classrooms.

Despite clear violations of affiliation norms set by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) done by a few of UT's government schools, nothing much has been done by the board so far.All the government schools in the city have affiliation from the board but few do not match the conditions set by the CBSE.

Account scheme for students puts banks in a fix
The well-meant initiative of the Chandigarh education department to open bank accounts for the over 1 lakh students of Classes nursery to 8 by March 31 has led to sheer mess. In a recent move, the education department had decided to deposit money for school uniforms in the accounts of the students so that they did not remain at the receiving end due to delay in getting uniforms like last year.

Two new schools to open in Dhanas by March-end
The 16-month long wait by the residents of Colony Number 5, Dhanas, to have two new schools- secondary and senior secondary, is likely to end by the end of this month, March 31. UT administration has set the deadline for the construction for both the school buildings which will have around 45 class rooms each for thousands of children in the area.

Dept to offer extra classes to help students bust exam stress
In order to reduce the stress during board exams, UT education department is gearing up to start extra classes for the students before or after their school. The department has asked the schools to send a list of the teachers who can volunteer to teach the students after school hours and can take classes an hour before the school in order to facilitate the students in their preparations for boards.

Exams nearing, teachers’ leave plans test schools
The UT education department has been swamped with applications for childcare leave (CCL) from female government school teachers. The two-year-old provision whereby teachers can avail of leave up to 730 days (two years) during their tenure to attend to their children’s needs has been giving school officials a hard time as they are already facing an acute staff shortage. With board and regular exams around the corner their problems have only been compounded.

Government schools in the district have not strengthened the security measures on campus despite the recent Peshawar massacre. The schools have not even deployed security guards at their gates. CBI court convicts two of throwing acid on girls
CBI, special court, Haryana, convicted two residents of Rohtak of throwing acid on three girls, all minor, in Rohtak on June 18, 2011, on Tuesday. However, a woman, who the prosecutor had alleged, was the main instigator behind the attack was acquitted. The sentencing will be done on Tuesday.
