Heaviest July rain in 21 years floods Delhi

Delhi experienced its heaviest rainfall for a July day in 21 years, causing chaos on the streets. The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert, and the Delhi Traffic Police reported waterlogging at 56 locations and fallen trees blocking several stretches. The heavy rain was a result of monsoon winds interacting with a western disturbance. The city's lack of preparedness for the monsoon season is concerning, especially as it aims to become a world-class city. More rain is expected in the coming days.

Bar marketing of harmful foods for children: WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued new guidelines calling for countries to prohibit the advertising of unhealthy food and drinks to children. WHO found that food marketing negatively impacts children's diets and contributes to health issues. The guidelines recommend mandatory policies to protect children from the marketing of high-fat, high-sugar, and high-salt products. WHO emphasized that previous recommendations made in 2010 have not been effective, and stronger regulations are needed to address the issue. Experts support the guidelines, stating that food marketing has a significant influence on children's eating habits and health.

Centre offering regenerative therapy for patients with damaged cornea opens

India's first centre for regenerative therapies for damaged corneas has opened in Delhi, allowing patients to undergo bioengineered cornea treatment. The hospital will use tissue-specific exosomes and tissue-mimetic biomaterials to promote regeneration of healthy, functional corneas. The treatment is liquid drops applied to the cornea, which solidify in less than 10 minutes and integrate into the patient's cornea. Dr Virender Sangwan, director of innovation at the hospital, said the partnership, with Pandorum Technologies, aimed to explore innovative therapies in the regenerative medicine space to replace human tissue with artificial cells.
