Ukraine: Putin is in an unwinnable quagmire

There seem to be few corrective mechanisms within Russia to compel Putin, who has dominated his country for 22 years, to change course and beat a retreat

From his labyrinth in the Kremlin, Putin does not see Ukraine’s spirited armed resistance to Russian occupation as the real problem. Rather, as his defence minister Sergei Shoigu puts it, Russia is at war “not so much with the Ukrainian army as it is with the collective West.” In Putin’s narrative, Ukrainians have become “cannon fodder” or proxies being exploited by the West to break up and tie down Russia. Why US-China tensions may lead to strategic instability

The expectation that Washington and Beijing will compete hard but manage tensions below a certain threshold is still valid, but it is hanging by a thread.

The China-Pakistan alliance may lead to more violence, terror

The investments that China has already sunk into CPEC and its strategy of ensuring India is kept under check in South Asia mean that Beijing will keep ploughing ahead to take over Pakistan inch-by-inch

Countering China’s ‘infowar’: India must think and act sharper

Playing defensive is not a losing strategy. But India must display intent that it can also bat on the front foot in emerging domains such as ‘informatised warfare’

If India’s armed forces have undertaken physical counter-offensive manoeuvers against the PLA along the border, why not unleash Indian cyber warriors to deflate China’s inflated hyper-nationalistic self-image and fuel already simmering domestic dissent among Chinese netizens about their government’s non-transparency? A century later, the Chinese Communist Party is at the crossroads

When Mao’s PRC was established in 1949, it was through such a bloody process against all odds that the new State’s outlook was militaristic and hostile

Suu Kyi’s win is comparable to Mandela’s ‘Long Walk to Freedom’

Suu Kyi’s win is comparable to Nelson Mandela’s ‘Long Walk to Freedom’. Yet, even though the NLD is on course to sweep more than two-thirds of the parliamentary seats, Suu Kyi will not become president of Myanmar the way Mandela did after apartheid was overthrown in South Africa writes Sreeram Chaulia

Saarc and Asean should work to fix growing migrant crisis

The surge of migrants and refugees from Bangladesh and Myanmar, on unstable boats and headed towards an unknown horizon in Indonesia and Malaysia, has shaken human conscience. Unwanted in their home countries these people are virtually prisoners of unscrupulous human smuggling networks spread across South and Southeast Asia. The discovery of mass graves in northern Malaysia illustrates this saga of cruelty and exploitation of the powerless.

The Soul Man
