The incident took place on the premises of the Betul district hospital on Tuesday evening but came to light on Thursday.

An eyewitness, who was present during the event and identified himself as Sankar, said a puja with tantric rituals, was organised by the relatives of a 65-year-old man, who died at the hospital a few months back.

Sankar said the group told him that they wanted to “capture” the soul of their dead relative, which was wandering in the hospital premises and take it back to Rajasthan.

Doctors and hospital staff stood by watching the tantric rites being performed, he said.

On Tuesday, eight people, including six men and two women came in a car, stopped at the main gate of the hospital and arranged puja material on the ground and among the group was a tantrik, who performed tantrik rituals with turmeric, rice, red vermillion and colours, said Sankar.

The group lit an earthen lamp that they said was “the captured soul of their dead relative”, covered it with a glass lid and took it back with them, said Sankar.

A man present in the group, who refused to identify himself, said that they were from Rajasthan and had come to the hospital to take the soul of their dead relative as he has been appearing in their dreams, asking them to take him away from the hospital. “They told me that they were fulfilling the wish of their dead relative.”

Hospital records show that on August 5, 2015, a 62-year-old man from Rajasthan died in the hospital.
