Bollywood seldom seeks inspiration from books. But when it does, it makes sure that it doesn’t disappoint the audience. Amir Khan’s 3 idiots (based on Chetan Bhagat’s Five Point Someone) is a stark example. It also managed to make it to the Top 250 Movies of all time at IMDB (Internet Movie Database). Devdas, Parineeta and Kai Po Che are a few other examples of Bollywood’s penchant for adaptations. The year 2014 will see a slew of movies following the same trend. From detective thrillers to a complicated love story, we give you an account of what to expect soon.

Filmmaker Vishal Bharadwaj makes no bones about the fact that he is a William Shakespeare fan. After Omkara, which was based on the Bard’s famous play Othello, Vishal is working on an adaptation of Hamlet. The film ran into trouble a few months ago, during a shooting schedule in Jammu and Kashmir. The release date hasn’t been decided yet, but will see actors Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor playing the lead role.

Based on contemporary author Chetan Bhagat’s novel by the same name, the film is directed by Abhishek Varman. Releasing on April 18 this year, the movie will see actors Alia Bhatt (who debuted in 2012 with Student of the Year) and Arjun Kapoor in lead roles. The film has been shot in Delhi, Chennai and Ahmedabad. All of Chetan Bhagat’s novels so far have been adapted for the big screen.

Bombay Velvet
This Anurag Kashyap directed film has already created a lot of buzz with Karan Johar playing a negative role for the very first time. Based on author Gyan Prakash’s novel Mumbai Fables, this movie will see Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma in the lead roles, paired opposite each other for the first time. Set in the early 1950s and 70s. Bombay Velvet is scheduled to release on Christmas this year.

Byomkesh Bakshi
Writer Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay’s fictional character will be revived yet again in this film directed by Dibakar Banerjee, which is set to hit theatres on July 23. Starring actor Sushant Singh Rajput (Kai Po Che) in the lead role, look forward to seeing the actor donning the traditional kurta pyjama solving crimes in the City of Joy - Kolkata.
