Mother’s Day: Juhi Chawla says her kids get upset if she stops to sign autographs
Actor Juhi Chawla says that her children, Arjun and Jhanvi, have hardly watched her films and it’s only in school that they are made aware of their mom’s star status.
Actor Juhi Chawla calls herself a regular mom and says she has made sure her kids don’t get influenced by her star status. A mother to two, Arjun (13) and Jhanvi (16), Juhi says before she became a mother, her life used to revolve around herself, but now, “my world revolves around them.”
The 49-year-old actor says that back home, “They don’t treat me like any star or something.” She says, “When we are out and some people ask me for an autograph or a photo, I mostly oblige and my kids get upset saying, ‘We can never have any fun with you. You stop for everything and we cannot do anything.’ They don’t even want to go out with me after that.”
On whether being a star mom is difficult or different in any way, Juhi says she has just another regular happy home. “I do make a fuss about what goes in their tiffin boxes and I’m concerned about whether everything is okay at school or is there any coaching that they need. I’m worried about their health, homework and all other concerns that every [other] mother has.”
Well, my kids have hardly seen any of my movies, not even Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke (1993). The one I could kind of drag them to [because they were very tiny] was Bhootnath (2008).
Asked about her children’s reaction to her films such as Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), Ishq (1997), and Juhi laughs, “Well, my kids have hardly seen any of my movies, not even Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke (1993). The one I could kind of drag them to [because they were very tiny] was Bhootnath (2008). I remember one of my kids was bawling half way through and asked, ‘How could you spank that little Banku boy?’ And the other one got so angry with me and said, ‘But you are my mummy, why are you pretending to be Banku’s mummy?’ So that was their reaction.”
And what about the actors that Juhi has worked with? Have her kids met anyone from the film fraternity or attended any film parties? “They sometimes meet Shah Rukh [Khan] uncle but other than him, not really! Parties, they haven’t been to any. At times, when I’m shooting just five minutes from my house, I ask if they’d like to come and see how I work and hope that they’ll get excited to come along, but Arjun and Jhanvi are so shy that they are like, ‘No way, we are not coming to your work. Whatever happens, we don’t want to come’.”
