New Bollywood trend: seasoned actors, fresh directors

Usually, directors launch fresh talent in Bollywood. The tide has turned of late. Established actors and actresses are now working with first time directors. Sweta Kaushal explores.

Usually, directors launch fresh talent in Bollywood. The tide has turned of late. Established actors and actresses are now working with first time directors.



Ranbir Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, John Abraham, Priyanka Chopra and Randeep Hooda are all working with debut directors for their upcoming films. That's not it. Recently released Ek Thi Daayan and Murder 3 too saw established actors working with debutant directors.



Gulaab Gang, the much-talked-about comeback film of Madhuri Dixit is being helmed by debutant director Soumik Sen.



Currently at post-production stage, it is based on a real-life organisation Gulaabi Gang (based in central India) that fights for justice for women. Madhuri plays the gang leader. Juhi Chawla and Mahie Gill also feature in the film.

Priyanka Chopra is working with Omang Kumar Bhandula, a debutant director, for a biopic on athlete Mary Kom. The project is being produced by filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Chopra is currently shooting for the movie.



Ranbir Kapoor will start shooting for Vicky Singh's Roy where he stars with Jacqueline Fernandes and Randeep Hooda.



Director Imtiaz Ali's brother Sajid Ali is set to mark his first film direction with John Abraham's Banana. Banana is a journey of an adolescent boy growing up and how he deals with it. Wonder Years! Speaking about the film John Abraham says that the target audience includes everyone from the youngsters to adults who have sweet-bitter memories from their experience of growing up. According to reports, John Abraham will produce the film and newcomers will star in it.



The film will go to floors in September.

Ahishor Solomon's first directorial venture John Day features veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah. The film is set to be released on September 13. Randeep Hooda will also be seen in the thriller.



Recently, we have seen two releases where established actors, if not stars, worked with debutant directors and came up with decent films. Subhash Kapoor's Jolly LLB, where Arshad Wrasi playing the lead, went on to win the hearts of and the viewers.







Randeep Hooda's Murder 3 was a debutante directorial venture of Vishesh Bhatt.
