BS-VI fuel norms, which will kick in from 2020, require significant technological modifications to present engines.

Even though Bosch makes Euro-VI complaint components, they can’t be used on Indian cars as-it-is. “The portion, which has to be Indianised is relatively high,” says Markus Heyn, a board member at Bosch, which will upgrade to BS-VI components in less than half the time it takes elsewhere.

Also, Heyn says that if European components are copied, it takes away advantages that a fresh project could offer, one being better profits.

So, Bosch is planning to more than double up resources. “We will require resources for caliberation and development. We will shift them once we have the number of engines manufactured. It will also need additional investments,” said Steffen Berns, MD at Bosch India.

However, Heyn doesn’t expect a major shift from diesel to petrol — it did not happen in Europe. Also, “the prices of the diesel vehicles did not go up, and the margins also did not decline,” says Heyn.

The move has forced Bosch to rethink about its “product development approach”. At least, Heyn is happy that Bosch has an existing solution (Euro VI) to start with.
