28% of students in 83 govt schools flunk Class-9 exams

Failure of Class 9 students in city government schools have disappointed the education department as around 3,755 students of 83 schools have failed to clear the exams. Though few schools are yet to submit their results to the education department, the results are likely to generate more discouraging figures from the city students.

According to the reports submitted by the respective schools, nearly 13,295 students took the exam, of which 9,540 students cleared the examinations of the respective grade, which means around 28% students were not able to pass the exams.

The Class-9 results have followed the usual trend as students in the periphery schools have once again let down the schools where as the students in the city’s schools have performed better. In Government Model Senior Secondary School (GMSSS), Sector 56, of the total 461 students who took the exam, 106 students would have to reappear.

In Government High School (GHS), Mauli Colony, out of the total 395 students who appeared in the examination, 219 students failed to clear the exam. 66 students of GHS Maloya Colony have compartments.

In Government Model High School (GMHS), Manimajra, 140 students have compartments, out of total 384 students. Out of the total 384 students of GMHS, Vikas Nagar, 150 students will out have to reappear in the exam.

Among other schools who failed to impress with the results included GMSSS (MHC), Manimajra, as out of total 484 students appearing in the examination, 181 students failed.

In GSSS, Mauli Jagran, 127 students have to reappear out of total 323 students. In GMHS, Sector 38, out of total 147 students, only 20 students cleared the exams. In GMSSS, Dhanas, out of total 220 students, 150 students failed to clear the exams.
On the other side, city’s top schools managed to do well. In GMSSS, Sector 18, out of total 621 students, 548 students managed to clear the exams. In GMSSS-10, out of total 305 students, 278 students cleared the exams.

In GMSSS-19, 164 students out of total 188 students managed to clear the exams and in GMSSS-16, 187 students out of total 236 students passed the exams.

Few schools even scored 100% results, including GMSSS, Sector 22-A, and SD High School, Sec-tor 22-A.

According to teachers, scarcity of teachers in the schools has led to setback to large number of students. Moreover, teachers are blaming the Continuous and Comprehensive evaluation (CCE) system and ‘No Detention Policy’ till Class eighth as reasons behind the mass failure.

“Despite knowing the drawbacks of the ‘No Detention Policy’ and CCE system, the HRD ministry is not doing much to demolish these. Students would not be able to do well till the time these policies would be followed in the country,” stated a senior education official.

The students who have to reappear this time will be provided another chance to clear the exam. Those who will not be able to clear the exams in their second attempt as well will be detained in the same class.
