Though the administration relented and decided to hold the meeting again on June 30, the manner in which the entire drama unfolded has left the BJP bewildered. Top party sources said they had not expected such an adamant stand from the administration that, too, against newly-elected MP Kirron Kher, who was yet to start her work.

To avoid such incidents in future and rein in ‘babus’, the BJP’s local unit president Sanjay Tandon is learnt to be working on a report on the working of the city administration. The report would be submitted to the ministry of home affairs (MHA) to apprise them of the functioning of various officials and the administrator and impact of it on the city and its residents in the past, party sources said.

Tandon admitted that he was working on a report but did not divulge details. “The report will be submitted to the ministry of home affairs and I would personally meet the minister and urge him to send the home secretary to Chandigarh to take stock of the situation,” he said.

The party sources say the idea about sending the report came from the party’s experience on the issue of the AAC meeting. Had the party leaders not exerted themselves, it would have become difficult for the MP and other leaders to work in future. The issues like regularisation of alterations in housing board societies and problems being faced by traders and others had been pending for years as former MP Pawan Kumar Bansal and administration officials were singing different tunes and Bansal, they feel, could not exert himself against officials.

“It is an MP who defends and pushes for works related to Chandigarh at the MHA as well as in Parliament. A minimum coordination and cooperation is required between the administration and MP for smooth functioning,” a senior BJP leader said.

The party sources say it was also wary as to what would happen to tall promises it made during the Lok Sabha election for development and resolving various issues, which are hanging fire for years. “It is very important to convey to officials that an elected representative has to be respected and taken on board on important matters. The idea (of the report) is to identify those officers, who are in the habit of running the show without taking political class on board,” another top BJP leader said.
