The Chandigarh administration will forward a parameter-based proposal to the ministry of urban development, seeking the smart city tag. This was announced by the administration after the launch of the Smart City Project in New Delhi on Thursday.

The event was attended by UT adviser Vijay Dev, UT finance secretary Sarvjit Singh, municipal commissioner Bhawna Garg and other officers in Delhi. At the launching ceremony, guidelines for the smart city project were unveiled.

On the occasion, Dev said: “We are well on track. A large proportion of the smart city concept is MC-oriented in terms of service delivery as well as income generation. The detailed project will be forwarded to the ministry by the administration.”

The finance secretary said, “We also have to highlight our preparedness in terms of financial discipline to be able to receive funds on priority.”

As per the guidelines, a smart city for its sustainability needs to offer economic activities and employment opportunities to a wide section of its residents, regardless of their level of education, skills or income levels.

As per the draft plan of the ministry, a smart city needs to identify its comparative or unique advantage and core competence in specific areas of economic activities and promote such activities aggressively.

A smart city means that it will have to provide a very high quality of life comparable with any developed European city.
