Chandigarh offers around 15,000 undergraduate seats in courses ranging from the ubiquitous BA to aerospace engineering in 20-odd colleges and other institutes across two universities.

Most colleges will release prospectuses soon. Applications for most courses will be accepted by June-end, but final dates will differ from college to college. The merit lists will be out by July 5 and admissions will begin on July 7. Panjab University offers Bsc (honours school) courses for which entrance test has been held and the result will be out within two weeks.
Five government colleges offer 6,000 seats
The five government colleges in the city offer 6,000 seats in BA, BSc and BCom with 85% reservation for students passing Class 12 from Chandigarh. Thus, there will be intense competition.
Even in other colleges, students from Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana might find it difficult to get in, with more than 1,000 students from the tricity scoring 90% marks in Class 12.
Apply online for BCom till June 12
PU is handling BCom admissions and the last date for online application is June 12. A merit list will be released based on applicants’ score in Class 12 and the preference of college indicated. For BBA, colle ges will adopt a centralised online system, with the website to be launched soon. There are 2,500 seats in city colleges in these two courses.
PU has conducted entrance examination for 413 seats in BSc and BPharma (honours) courses. The merit list will be out by month-end, with admissions in July.
Single platform for five engineering institutes
Admissions to engineering courses at PEC University of Technolo g y and University Institute of Engineering and Technology will be on the basis of student’s ranking in JEE and perfor mance in Class 12 combined. The Chandigarh College of Architecture; Chandigarh Colle g e of Engineering and Technology, Sector- 26 , and University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology, PU, are following the pattern.
“We expect quality students. Cut-offs are likely to go up as the CBSE lowered the minimum qualification for taking the JEE examination to 45%,” said US Shivhare, chair man, joint admission committee of these colleges. He added that the high CBSE scores would not impact admissions.
Six women colleges
Six of the city colleges are for women, offering 4,300 seats. For the science stream, with 2,100 seats across colleges, experts see competition. For BA and BSc, colleges will give admissions on merit. The 1,400 seats in professional courses like biotechnology and bioinformatics will be filled on merit, by colleges.
“Cut offs will rise in courses like BSc (non-medical), BSc (biotechnology), BSc (bioinformatics) and BSc (computer science),” said Dalip Kumar, PU senator and admissions incharge at Government College, Sector 42.
