During his visit to Chandigarh College of Architecture, Hodder said the administration should look after the city as it was designed by one of the world’s best architects.

“Corbusier proposed to make post and telegraph building in Sector 17, which was supposed to be an 11-storey building and could have been one of the beautiful constructions in the world, but unfortunately the project is yet to be planned. As per my information, he also proposed to build a museum of knowledge,” Hodder said. He said people of Chandigarh should feel proud to be the residents of the city and should work to preserve their heritage.

Refuting the fact that there is less scope of architectural modulations in the city due to its compact situation as the city is compressed between SAS Nagar and Panchkula, he said it was not necessary to expand the city physically but it was very important to smartly develop it within available space.

Talking about the possibility of metro running in the city, Hodder said the job would not be easy for the administration and thus, the officials needed to mark the appropriate points to build metro stations.

“The authorities will have to make sure that while constructing metro stations, they will not hamper commercial businesses in the city,” he said.

Expressing disappointment over people using Corbusier’s name for selling the furniture abroad, he said it was a disgrace to the legendary architect.

The RIBA president will deliver a lecture at a workshop at National Association of Students of Architecture to be held in Chennai next week.
