The national tech fest, Techinvent 2015, saw participation from over 1,000 teams from renowned institutions like IITs, IIITs, NITs, IIMs and other state, private universities from across the country.
A gadget for your feelings
A team of polytechnic students came up with an emotion detector-based on the principle used in a lie detector. “The system uses a technology called ‘Sobel filter’ which analyses the expression of your eyes and lips in great detail to arrive upon what you are feeling,” says Yashika, 21, who along with Charanjit Singh, 22, conceptualised the machine.
Future alternative to petrol?
While scientists have been struggling to find convenient option for vehicles running on exhaustible fuel like petrol, Shubham, 21, a mechanical engineering student attempted to make a car running on water. At present the car uses petrol and potassium oxide as fuel. The potassium oxide helps to create water molecules that further help the car to function. “Currently, our oxy-hydrogen vehicle ignites on petrol, then runs on hydrogen. Once we are able to acquire a more powerful engine, we will be able to build a vehicle that runs only on water,” says the 21-year-old.
Virtual reality in your pocket
While Google Glass seems to be an unaffordable option for being a part of the Virtual Reality (VR), a team of computer science and engineering students aim at making it accessible to all. Their VR model which would take the audience onto a 3D roller coaster ride simply by putting on the glasses and headphones. “Our kit is compatible with most smart phones. Using this you can watch 3D movies, fully immerse yourself in games with our 360 degree head tracking feature and a lot more on your mobile,” said Jitesh Thakur, 21, one of its creators.
Best out of waste
The GenNext has taken PM Narendra Modi’s Swachch Bharat Abhiyaan to the next level. A team of architecture students put together several models using only scraps. The most spectacular of the lot would be a 4-foot tall Eiffel Tower that was made out of waste pencils. It also had home decor made out of plastic cups and bottles.
