Parts of Bengaluru to face water supply cut today. LIVE updates

A Bengaluru cardiologist said that it is pointless to buy a home in Bengaluru if BBMP do not supply water for next 99 years.

In an X post, Dr. Deepak Krishnamurthy said, “People buying a house in #Bengaluru should insist on a water contract with the builder/BBMP. At any time, the builder/BBMP has to supply water for the next 99 years. Otherwise, there is no point buying expensive homes. #Water and people with existing homes should stop paying property taxes unless the govt is able to supply adequate water.”

The BBMP has noted the urgency of the situation, and on Saturday, a level meeting was conducted to handle the situation. The civic body allocated a substantial budget of ₹131 crores for drilling bore wells in priority zones, including Mahadevpur, RR Nagar, Bommanahalli, Dasarahalli, and Yelahanka, and 110 surrounding areas.

Karnataka Opposition leader R Ashoka asked govt how it is going to face next three months as Summer is around the corner. Earlier, he said, “What is govt upto? How is it going to face the upcoming summer if it is failing to deal the crisis in Feb? Govt must come up with clean plan of action to deal with the water crisis.”

To those who do not get Cauvery water supply, they are depending on water tankers in Bengaluru. People on social media are now alleging that these water tankers are looting people by charging them with extra charges. A 1000 ltr water tanker that roughly costs ₹600- ₹800 is now costing more than ₹2000 in parts of Bengaluru. The governement is also getting a demand to put a price cap on these tankers.

The water crisis in Bengaluru is also said to be the consequence of water body encroachements. Over the last four decades, the city has lost 79% of water bodies and 88% of green cover, while areas covered by concrete have increased 11-fold, according to studies at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).

Karnataka DCM DK Shivakumar said that entire state has water problem and his governement is adressing it. He said, “The state saw shortage of rainfall and water problem is not just confined to Bengaluru. We are trying to fix the issue and officers are already directed to come up with a solution.”

Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya said that crumbling lake eco system and rapid white-topping are contributing to city water woes.

“The factor that adds up to the issue is the failure in maintaining the lake ecosystem in the city, thanks to neglect and encroachments. This has resulted in substantial reduction of aquifers.Mindless white topping of roads is further reducing the ground water level in the areas,” he said in an X post.

Though there are multiple reasons for the current severe water woes in the IT hub, severe drought is considered one of the significant reasons. The lack of rainfall in the past year has decreased water levels in the Cauvery River and not just the drinking water, but there has been a shortfall in the supply of water for irrigation needs as well. The borewells in Bengaluru, too, are running dry due to deficit rainfall in the past few months.

Most parts of Bengaluru get water from the Cauvery River with authorised BWSSB connections. The city is reportedly getting 1,450 million litres of Cauvery water per day and still is falling short of the requirement. Roughly 1,700 million litres of water per day is required for Bengaluru city for its daily needs.

However, those who do not have a Cauvery water connection have been getting water from their borewells and water tankers. Most of the swanky apartments in east Bengaluru depend entirely on these borewells and water tankers.

Karnataka BJP head BY Vijayendra attacked the Congress government and said that the ruling party does not care for the state. He said, “Siddaramaiah and his government is unable to handle the water crisis in Bengaluru. His party has prioritized political alliances over intrests of people and released Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. The water crisis is the result of mis management and lack of commitment.”

As Bengaluru's water body will be responsible for 24-hour long water supply disruption, it ahs alrted the residents who are living in the affected areas. People were already alerted to store some extra water as supply will be stopped on February. A few residents have also alerted water tanker suppliers to supply water for the day.

The water disruption from 6am today to 6am tomorrow is due to the emergency maintenance works of BWSSB (Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewage Board). The Unaccounted For Water (UFW) bulk flow metres will be installed, and BWSSB will alert the residents.

According to BWSSB list, areas like Nandadeepa layout, Shankarappa layout, Pattanagere, Mylasadra village, Bhoomika layout, University layout 4th and 5th stage, BEML 10th stage, Manipal 5th stage, Bhuvaneshwari nagara 1st and 2nd stage, Kengeri upanagara, Kengeri, Nagadevanahalli and etc will face water supply disruptions.
