On the occasion of Ugadi, social media was flooded with wishes and messages from several notable figures, including prime minister Narendra Modi, union home minister Amit Shah, Karnataka chief minister Basavaraj Bommai, Biocon chief Kiram Mazumdar-Shaw and many others.

Ugadi, also called Gudi Padwa in some parts of India, is usually celebrated on the first day of Chaitra Navratri, which falls in the first month of the Hindu lunar calendar, known as Chaitra. Therefore, Ugadi is celebrated as the Hindu New Year.

“Happy Ugadi festival to all the people of Karnataka. May this vibrant festival bring new hope, happiness, progress and prosperity in your life,” union home minister Amit Shah wrote in Kannada on microblogging site Twitter.

PM Modi also wrote a message in Kannada, saying, “Happy Ugadi everyone!”

Biocon chief Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw also took to Twitter, sharing this sweet message on the prominent Hindu festival.

"Happy Ugadi festival to all the people of the country. I pray that this festival brings new hope, happiness, peace, tranquillity and prosperity in your lives," CM Bommai wrote.

“On the first day of Chaitra month, Karnataka Tourism Department wishes all the citizens of the country to celebrate Ugadi festival or New Yuga (year) festival to welcome the spring season enthusiastically with the springing of nature's new shoots,” the Karnataka tourism department wrote.

The Hindu Jana Jagruti Samithi's Karnataka unit also posted Ugadi wishes. “Greetings on occasion of Ugadi. On this auspicious day let us resolve to educate ourselves about Dharma and also to impart it to others so as to awaken a love for Dharma for it's protection & establish Hindu Rashtra,” the pro-Hindu outfit tweeted.

Another Twitter user shared the decorations made on the streets of Hubballi for the festival.

Others including the Karnataka forest department also wished the people of the state a happy Ugadi.
