Dakshina Kannada superintendent of police Rishikesh Sonawane said that the woman’s husband Imran Sheikh worked at a hotel owned by K Santhosh at Odabai in Sullia town. “After marrying her in West Bengal about eight months back, Sheikh had rented a house from Shivarama Shastri in Beeramangala,” said police.

“He had left for his native place within 15 days of joining the work here and later, returned with his wife. He had stayed in a room in the hotel bar with her for 15 days and later shifted to a rented house at Beeramangala,” said a police officer.

In his complaint to the Sullia police on Tuesday, Santhosh said Sheikh had taken a long leave from work from November 19 stating that he had to take his wife to her home town for delivery. She was physically challenged and walked with the help of a stick, said police.

On Monday, Keerthan Shetty, who works as a waiter in the bar, was informed by Imran’s neighbour Rohith that they had heard a woman’s screams coming from Imran’s house on Sunday night, police said.

When asked, Imran had informed the neighbour that his wife fell in the toilet, police said. When the hotel owner called Sheikh on Tuesday, his number was switched off.

“After Imran’s behaviour raised suspicion, Santhosh visited his rented house on Tuesday and noticed the light in the room. When he peeped through the window, he noticed a phone on the table and light in the toilet. He also noticed a gunny bag near the toilet,” the officer added.

He soon contacted the police and informed police that Imran had left with a bag on Sunday night and he didn’t see his wife accompanying him. Following a search, police found the body inside the gunny bag.

A case of murder has been registered and an investigation is in progress, said the SP.
