AAP government incapable of maintaining law and order in Punjab: Rahul Gandhi
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted his attack on the AAP government shortly after meeting the family of singer Sdhu Moose Wala.
New Delhi: On his first visit to Punjab after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was voted to power, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday mounted a sharp attack on the Bhagwant Mann government, saying the state government was not able to maintain law and order in the state.
Gandhi, who was in the state to meet the family of singer-politician Sidhu Moose Wala, later tweeted in Hindi: “It is hard to express the pain that the Congress leader Sidhu Moose Wala’s parents are going through. Providing them justice is our moral duty and we will do that. The law order in the state has completely broken down. The AAP government has failed to maintain peace in the state”.
The 28-year-old singer was shot dead a few kilometres from his village home on May 29 in what the police have described as an inter-gang rivalry. The incident took place a day after the Punjab Police curtailed the number of security personnel assigned to Moose Wala who joined the Congress ahead of the Punjab assembly election and was fielded from the Mansa assembly seat. He, however, lost to AAP’s Vijay Singla, who rose to become Punjab health minister before his arrest on corruption charges.
Leaders cutting across parties and other prominent persons have been visiting Moose Wala’s village to meet the family and express their condolences.
Shortly before Gandhi’s arrival, Congress’ Patiala MP Preneet Kaur, who was last year served a show-cause notice for her alleged anti-party activities, also visited the singer’s house to express condolences. However, Kaur, the wife of former chief minister Amarinder Singh, left before the former Congress chief arrived.
Rahul Gandhi was accompanied by several Congress leaders including Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, Leader of Opposition in the Punjab assembly Partap Singh Bajwa and former deputy chief minister OP Soni.
Last week, Punjab’s chief minister Bhagwant Mann also met the Moose Wala family at their home. Mann’s government has been under fire for scaling down the singer-politician’s security along with 423 other people.
