The cops, who were deployed at the Sector-24 police post, have been booked under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code on the basis of transcripts of conversation between them and complainant Ranjeet Singh.

Ranjeet had on March 15 directly approached the CBI with his complaint that Rana, who was his former tenant, had been threatening to implicate him in a fake rape case and sought 20,000 to back down.

He alleged that Rana had already taken 10,000 from him on March 10 and later mounted pressure on him to meet ASI Kumar.

After Ranjeet lodged a complaint with SP, CBI, Chandigarh, a trap was laid as per which the complainant was to record the conversation between him and the cops. On meeting the cops, Ranjeet agreed to pay the remaining amount, but he was on March 17 asked to pay 1 lakh. Ranjeet informed the CBI that he agreed to arrange 50,000 as the first instalment.

The CBI in its investigation report submitted that the conversation between the complainant and the accused established that Rana has already taken 10,000 as bribe. “ASI Kumar told the complainant that Rana would settle the case after receiving the remaining amount. The conversation between the trio has substantiated the acceptance of 10,000 from the complainant and further demand of 50,000 as undue advantage on the part of suspects head constable Rana and ASI Kumar,” read the CBI report.

However, defence counsel Deepa Dubey argued that no money has been recovered from the cops and alleged that CBI officials had hurt the children of Rana while arresting him.
