The Khanna police are in ‘double trouble’ after lodging an FIR against two members of a family for beating the third one after taking suo motu action.

After lodging the FIR, the police realised that all three members of the family are suffering from some mental disorder and they are taking them to different hospitals for medical examination to diagnose the problem.
The problem for the police is that as they have lodged an FIR, they cannot just cancel it. If they continue the investigation, they need to take them to hospital and cannot leave them on their own till the court orders to send them to some asylum.
The Khanna police on November 23 lodged an FIR against Manga Singh of Basant Nagar of Khanna along with his mother Satwant Kaur for thrashing his father, Jaila, 60, brutally with sticks after someone recorded the video and made it viral on social networking sites.
Though the victim had not lodged any complaint, taking suo motu action, the police themselves lodged an FIR in the matter following the complaint of home guard personnel Gurtej Singh. The police took the victim to a hospital for medical examination where the doctors found that he was suffering from some mental disorder. The doctors asked the police to conduct tests on the victim to diagnose the disorder.
Meanwhile, the police have arrested his son Manga Singh for assaulting his father on Friday. They took the accused to hospital for medical examination where the doctors found that he was also suffering from some mental disorder. The doctors referred him to Rajindra hospital, Patiala, for the test. The police took him to Patiala, but the test was not conducted as the medical staff concerned was on leave. They will take him to Patiala on Monday.
ASI Sukhdev Singh, who is investigating the case, said a case was lodged under Sections 323, 341 and 34 of the IPC against the accused on the basis of the video. The victim and the accused are unable to explain anything. Both of them answer the queries in one word only. It is very tough to make them speak.
He added that when they enquired about the family from the neighbours, they told police that they have some mental disorder and don’t talk to anyone. They used to indulge in a spat with each other.
The ASI added that as the FIR has been registered they are bound to take it to dispose it of according to the law. They arrested Satwant Kaur and took her to hospital for medical examination.
