Punjab Congress Legislature Party leader terms disqualification of party leader Rahul Gandhi from Parliament a ‘new low in Indian politics’

Partap Singh Bajwa, the leader of the Congress Legislature Party in Punjab, on Friday termed the disqualification of party leader Rahul Gandhi as a member of Parliament after his conviction by a Surat court in a criminal defamation case “a new low in Indian politics”.

“Disqualifying @RahulGandhi ji as member of Lok Sabha is a new low in Indian politics. He has been punished by brute force of the BJP for raising issues linked to Adani, rising inflation and unemployment in Parliament. He was raising voice of millions of Indians in Parliament,” Bajwa tweeted soon after the Wayanad MP got a disqualification notice.

Gandhi has been disqualified as a member of the Lok Sabha from March 23, the date of his conviction by the Surat court over his “Modi surname” remark.

On Thursday, the court sentenced Gandhi to two years’ imprisonment in the defamation case filed against him by BJP MLA Purnesh Modi for his alleged remark, “How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname?”

Gandhi made the remark in April 2019 at a Lok Sabha election rally at Kolar in Karnataka.

The court approved Gandhi’s bail on a surety and stayed the sentence for 30 days to allow him to approach the higher courts.

Meanwhile, the Congress has called a meeting of its steering committee members, Pradesh Congress Committee presidents, CLP leaders and frontal organisation chiefs in Delhi this evening to discuss the “recent political developments”.
