He said the elephant brutally attacked the woman who was leading the group resulting in her spontaneous death, while the three others were injured.

The deceased was identified as Luxmi Devi,48, who lived near Kanvashram. The police took her body into their possession and sent it for postmortem. The three injured were rushed to the nearby government hospital at Kotdwar, said Tiwari.

Amid the incident, Tiwari said, 4 lakh will be provided to the next of kin of the deceased while interim financial relief will also be provided to the injured.

Meanwhile, the villagers around the area have demanded relief from frequent attacks of the elephants in the area.

Tiwari informed that the Kotdwar area falls in the elephant corridor and is a permanent habitat for them. The villagers have been cautioned on many occasions to not to use the path as the tuskers frequent the stream for drinking water in the area.
