32-year-old man shot 5 times in east Delhi over 10-year rivalry between families
Police said that the family of the victim, Ravi Yadav, and that of the accused, Sunil Gupta, were business partners 10 years ago
A 32-year-old gym trainer was shot four to five times and left critically injured in Trilokpuri, east Delhi on Thursday. The victim had a 10-year-long feud with his neighbours which led to the shooting, said police, adding that two people have been arrested in connection with the case.
Police said that the family of the victim, Ravi Yadav, and that of the accused, Sunil Gupta, were business partners but a misunderstanding led to a decade-long fight involving filing multiple RTIs, threats and assaults. Yadav is a gym trainer and Gupta works in the property dealing business, said police.
The incident took place at 12.28 am in Trilokpuri on Thursday. Police said they received a call and rushed to the scene.
“The caller alleged that a group of people shot his nephew. The injured man, Ravi Yadav, was rushed to LBS Hospital with multiple gunshot injuries. Yadav alleged that his neighbour shot him with the help of two associates. Yadav’s family later took him to Max Hospital, Patparganj,” said Apoorva Gupta, deputy commissioner of police (east).
During the investigation, police said they found Yadav’s family had a long-standing rivalry with the family of Sunil Gupta, who shot Yadav. Gupta has been arrested with an associate. The third accused is on the run, said police.
The DCP said, “They would fight over petty issues. Yadav’s uncle, Virender Yadav, is an advocate at the Karkardooma court who would file multiple RTIs against Gupta’s brother, Vipin Gupta, who worked as a nursing assistant at a government hospital. Because of the RTIs filed by Yadav, Vipin Gupta lost his job...”
Police said the rivalry took a violent turn in March when Sunil was allegedly attacked with knives and rods outside his house. Police said that a case of attempted murder was lodged against Yadav who was then arrested. Police said he got off with the help of his uncle who is a lawyer.
A senior police officer said, “The Yadavs accused the Guptas of criminal activities and consuming drugs. The RTIs and complaints against Vipin cost him his job last week. Due to this, the families and their lawyers had a heated argument at the Karkardooma court on Wednesday.”
The next day, police said, Gupta shot Yadav. Police registered a case under sections of attempted murder.
