Deputy commissioner of police (Dwarka) Harsha Vardhan Mandava said head constable Rinku, along with ASI Sunil of Chhawla police station, was conducting beat patrolling on Sunday night when they received a quarrel and assault call.
A 34-year-old Delhi police head constable was stabbed twice at Qutub Vihar near Chhawla in South West Delhi by an assailant who was later caught after a gunfight with police personnel, police said.
The assailant was identified as Sunny alias Shooter, a known criminal.
Deputy commissioner of police (Dwarka) Harsha Vardhan Mandava said head constable Rinku, along with assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Sunil of Chhawla police station, were conducting beat patrolling on Sunday night when they received a quarrel and assault call at 8.30pm taking place in the neighbourhood.

After reaching the spot, they saw some boys assaulting an auto-rickshaw driver, and when the head constable pursued Sunny, he stabbed Rinku and fled the spot, police said.
“Our policemen pursued the alleged boys. Head constable Rinku caught one of them who was a known criminal. Sunny stabbed Rinku twice and fled,” the DCP said.
“The injured head constable was rushed to a hospital where he is undergoing treatment and his condition is said to be stable,” the DCP added.
Amid the incident, teams were formed to nab Sunny and others involved in the crime, police said.
“Police collected information about the suspects from informers and through technical surveillance and learnt that Sunny was hiding with his associates in a house on Bhai-Bhai Road in Qutub Vihar,” the DCP said.
They raided the place, and nearly six hours later, at around 2.30am on Monday, Sunny was arrested after a gunfight with the police team, officials privy with the matter said. They said Sunny received two bullet wounds following which he surrendered.
Police said that apart from Sunny, two more suspects were also caught who identified themselves as juveniles. The police are verifying their age, senior police officers aware of the two incidents said.
“One country-made pistol with three cartridges and a button-activated knife was recovered from the place where the three suspects were caught. Further legal action is on,” DCP Mandava said.
A case of an attempt to murder and attack on police personnel was registered against Sunny and others involved in the crime.
This is the second knife attack on a policeman in Delhi this month.
In a similar attack that took place on January 4, assistant sub-inspector Shambhu Dayal of the Mayapuri police station was killed after he was stabbed more than 10 times with a knife in full public view by a snatcher.
