Infant girl found in garbage yard in outer Delhi’s Nangloi: Cops

A two-day-old baby girl was found abandoned in a garbage dump yard in outer Delhi’s Nangloi on Tuesday morning, police officers aware of the matter said, adding that the infant has been sent to a home for children.
Harender Singh, deputy commissioner of police (outer), said the police control room received a call about the abandoned baby at 10.44am. “The caller said a baby was abandoned in a garbage dump yard,” the DCP said.
A police team reached the spot and found a hospital tag the baby’s wrist, revealing her to be born at 3.15pm on Sunday. “The first names of her mother and father were also mentioned on the tag. We are using the available details on the tag to reach out to all hospitals around in a bid to identify the parents,” said a police officer, who was not authorised to speak to the media.
The child was rushed to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital for a medical examination and treatment. “The child did not appear hurt. Doctors tended to her, after which she was sent to a home for children,” said the officer.

The police registered a case under Indian Penal Code section 317, that pertains to the exposure and abandonment of a child under 12 years, by parent or person having care of it. If convicted, the people responsible for the abandonment could be jailed for up to seven years.
The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), meanwhile, said they received a call about the baby on their helpline, following which they alerted the police. “A DCW team is currently present with the child,” said the DCW in a statement.
Its chairperson, Swati Maliwal, said that she has issued a notice to the police, seeking an action-taken report in the matter. “…the persons responsible for abandoning the girl child should be arrested,” she said.
