The ‘early warning system’ followed in the Netherlands is about tracking student attendance and contacting parents of students missing from school for 40 days or more and to get them back to school.

State’s basic education minister Sandeep Singh reached the Netherlands and held discussions with the country’s primary and secondary education minister Dennis Wiersma to learn more about the ‘early warning system’ that is likely to be introduced in U.P. soon.

U.P. could be country’s first state to implement the Dutch model.

“We have been enlightened about the vision of Dutch education system by the representatives of Department of Equal Opportunities and Educational Support, the Netherlands. A special discussion session was organised on the topics of compulsory education and early school leaving in Port City Rotterdam, the Netherlands,” tweeted Singh, who along with a 12-member delegation of teachers and officers had reached the Netherlands on March 29.

Officials said U.P. government is interested in the “early warning system” as it could help check the student dropout rate and to give a boost to government’s plan to ensure free and compulsory education plan for all children between 6 years to 14 years of age.

The U.P. delegation also visited “Zadkine, success centre”, a unique school imparting skill development-based education.

“Visited a school in the Netherlands, which has phenomenal infrastructure and had a chit-chat with the kids. It was great to know that a lot of children are somehow connected to India,” the minister tweeted.

“On the first day the delegation attended a brain storming session based on “tackling early school leaving” where officials informed us how they identify the kids who are willing to dropout from the school system. We visited the Indian Embassy on the second day of our visit. Here, we got the opportunity to meet Reenat Sandhu, Indian ambassador to the Netherlands,” the minister added.

“In the Netherlands a student is tracked by the authorities if the student is absent for more than 40 days. Their parents are contacted to find the reason for the student missing school. After this, a team is formed to bring the students back in school. This system could be helpful in checking school dropout rate and if implemented, U.P. will become India’s first state to do so,” said director general, school education, Vijay Kiran Anand.

Snehil Pandey, a teacher from Composite School, Soharamau, Unnao who received a national award in 2020 and is a part of the delegation to the Netherlands said there was a possibility of U.P. implementing a similar model.
