State-of-the-art crawler cameras to be used for detecting water pipe leakages

The civic body’s water engineering department has invited tenders for the use of crawler cameras – Camarilla – for two years.

Mumbai: To reduce the time for repair work and smoothen water supply, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will use state-of-the-art crawler cameras to find the exact location of leaks in the waterways and special equipment will also be used for inspection under the water tunnel.

The civic body’s water engineering department has invited tenders for the use of crawler cameras – Camarilla – for two years.

As per the BMC, finding the exact location of water leakage due to the distribution network or contaminated water supply is a very challenging and time-consuming process due to the underground network of waterways in the city.

“A crawler camera will be now used inside the water channel with the help of special equipment having CCTV-like methods. With the help of crawler cameras, it is possible to get the video of the name, place, the scene of the incident and also record the video. Due to the use of cameras, it will be possible to get this data at any time,” said the BMC in a press statement.

The Camarilla has four wheels and is capable of crossing distances of up to 200 metres or camera movement can be done by remote sensor.

The camera assumes significance when it is not possible for humans to descend and work in water channels to search for leakage. It can capture data such as the size of the aqueduct and turbidity in the aqueduct, as well as can be used for water channels of 250 mm to 1,200 mm diameter.
