Mumbai: The state government is planning a new hospital in the city for infectious diseases as the existing Kasturba Hospital is overburdened, said industries minister Uday Samant in council, adding that the government is looking for land to construct the hospital.
Thackeray faction legislators Vilas Potnis, Sunil Shinde and Anil Parab raised the issue of infectious diseases and the need for one more special hospital in Mumbai. They pointed out that the last MVA government had proposed to build a new hospital for infectious diseases in Mulund and demanded that a new hospital should be built in the suburbs.
Responding to the discussion, Samant, who is currently in charge of the urban development department, accepted that the 120-year-old Kasturba Hospital is the only place for infectious diseases and considering the increasing number of patients, the city needs one more hospital. “Government is positive on building the new hospital for infectious diseases and will look for the land to set up a new hospital,” he added.
MLC Mahadev Jankar while participating in the discussion said that there is land available in the Dindoshi area in the western suburbs of Mumbai. MLC Sachin Ahir said that the government can consider the land of port trust for such projects of public service.
