Man held for trying to kidnap minor over issues with his parents

A man was arrested in Mumbai for attempting to kidnap a 12-year-old boy over previous issues with his parents. The boy managed to escape and the family later identified and caught the kidnapper. An FIR has been registered against the accused.

MUMBAI: A man was arrested on Monday for allegedly trying to kidnap a 12-year-old boy over previous issues with his parents. The incident occurred when the boy was going to a grocery store near his residence in the RCF colony when the accused, Imam Husain Rahim Qureshi, 35, got out of an auto, gagged him, and forced him to sit in. Scared, the boy tried to fight Qureshi, he bit his hand, and somehow managed to escape from the auto, said a police officer.

Police officials said that the accused and the victim’s family had previously fought over petty issues, and the accused wanted to scare the family and tried to kidnap the boy. The complainant, Khurshid Shaikh, 33, is a housemaker and lives in Vashi Naka, Chembur, with her husband, children, and parents. Her husband works as a driver in Mahabaleshwar.

In her statement to the police, Shaikh said that the incident took place on October 16 when she had sent her 12-year-old son to the nearby grocery store. But after some time, her son came home crying and appeared to be in a state of shock. The boy eventually narrated the incident to her.

Shaikh, her brothers, and her son then went near the incident spot to search for the kidnapper. The family kept a watch on the suspected kidnapper for days, and on Monday, the boy recognised Qureshi, who had tried to kidnap him, said the police officer.

The family got a hold of the person and called the police. A police team arrived at the spot and took the Qureshi. Based on Shaikh’s statement, an FIR was registered against Qureshi under section 363 with 511 (attempting to kidnap) of the Indian Penal Code, said assistant police inspector Kiran Mandre of the RCF police station.
