“Rescue operation is still on and we have pressed all resources to rescue rest of the people,” a company executive said requesting anonymity.

The chopper, which was carrying seven ONGC employees, landed in Bombay High around 11:50am using the floaters that are attached to aircraft used to carry personnel and material from shore to offshore installations.

It is not immediately clear what forced the emergency lending of the helicopter. The company, which is currently busy in the rescue operation, is expected to issue a statement giving details, an ONGC spokesperson said.

Coast Guard spokesperson Commandant RK Singh said a Coast Guard aircraft dropped a life raft for the survivors and a nearby patrolling ship has been diverted to the spot to aid the rescue efforts. Singh said a second Coast Guard ship has been dispatched from Mumbai to join the rescue operation.

Singh said the Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre diverted OSV Malviya 16, a commercial vessel which was passing through the area for the rescue operation and picked up five of the six survivors. The sixth survivor was picked by an ONGC support vessel operating in the area.

ONGC has several rigs and installations in the Arabia Sea that are used to produce oil and gas from reservoirs lying below the seabed.
