MUMBAI: The former driver of singer Sonu Nigam’s father Agamkumar Nigam has been arrested for the alleged theft that took place in the house of Nigam senior earlier this week. The Oshiwara police also claim to have seized the amount of ₹70.70 lakh out of the stolen booty of ₹72 lakh from the accused. The court has remanded the accused in police custody for six days.
Sonu’s sister Nikita had registered a complaint with the police on Wednesday. She had also submitted CCTV footage to the police showing the former driver Rehan aka Ramzan Tajuddin Mujawar walking out of her father’s building, Windsor Grand in Oshiwara, on two occasions when the senior citizen had stepped out of the house. Based on circumstantial evidence, police nabbed the driver and claimed that he later confessed to the theft.
“The driver was apprehended from his native place in Kolhapur on Thursday morning. He was produced in court on Friday morning. Our team was able to recover most of the money. By the time we could reach him, he had already spent some of it on buying clothes and to pay off some of his debt,” said Anil Paraskar, DCP. He added that investigation is on to ascertain if some other people were involved in the house break-in.
As per the FIR registered with the Oshiwara police, the theft had taken place either on Sunday or Monday. Agamkumar had gone to Nikita’s place for lunch on Sunday and to Sonu’s place on Monday. In her complaint to the police, Nikita had said that her father called her on Monday evening to tell her about ₹72 lakh missing from two separate lockers in his house. The next day, the family members approached the building management to check the CCTV footage and see if someone had entered the house, as there was no damage to either of the lockers nor were there any signs of forceful entry.
The complaint had mentioned that the CCTV footage of the building had shown that Rehan, who had been fired as Nigam senior’s driver eight months ago, had visited the building on both the days. He could also be seen carrying a bag in the footage. He had spare keys to the house.
