Virar gang-rape case: Arrested duo sent to police custody till March 27

MUMBAI: Two men who were arrested on Thursday for allegedly gang-raping a 20-year-old woman after assaulting and stripping her boyfriend in the forest area in Virar East were remanded to police custody till March 27 by a Vasai court on Friday.

The woman’s boyfriend on Friday said that he could not bear seeing his girlfriend being raped by the two, “I just picked up a bottle near me and smashed it on the head of one of the accused. As he started bleeding, the other accused came for his help. I saw a chance and quickly told my girlfriend to save herself and run away,” said the man who added, “I just wanted her safety first.” (HT Photo)

The accused, identified as Dheeraj Soni (25) and Yash Shinde (24), have told the police that they saw the woman and her boyfriend hugging and kissing. The police officers stated that the two men, who do not have any criminal record, saw an opportunity to extort money from them. The officer added that the two first clicked videos and photos of the couple and threatened to post them online.

The accused who are residents of the Chandansar area in Virar East do odd jobs. “Soni and Shinde are friends and visit the forest area in the evenings for a walk,” said a police officer from Virar police station. “The two asked for 5,000 from the couple to delete the photos but when the couple said they did not have that much amount, the accused asked for 2,000,” said Rajendra Kamble, senior police inspector of Virar police station.

After negotiations, the victim transferred 500 online, the extort the rest of the money, the men snatched his mobile phone, watch and the woman’s earrings. “The two accused assaulted and stripped the boyfriend,” said the officer.

The boyfriend regained consciousness at 6.30pm and looked around for rags to cover his body. “As he came out of the forest, the locals of the area spotted him who was bleeding from his forehead and called the police emergency number,” said the officer.

Soni, who had gone to a local clinic to bandage his wound, was arrested there by the Virar police. “We are now awaiting the medical reports of the woman and are also finding out whether the accused had targeted any other person,” said Kamble.
