After reporting more than 100 cases daily for four consecutive days this month, the numbers have been around 70-80 for the third day now. The positivity rate that was around 8.5% three days ago has reduced to 7.63% on Monday, with no fluctuation in the testing numbers. Around 1,500 samples are being tested daily in the district and doctors said that though cases are reducing, they need to be monitored for a few more days to establish a trend.

“There has been a slight increase in cases in the past two weeks. We have to wait for a couple of more days to see whether cases are still on an upward tick. We saw a similar increase last month as well, but cases soon reduced and the severity of the infection has been very less,” said Dr Manoj Kushwaha, district surveillance officer, Gautam Budh Nagar.

Meanwhile, with schools reopening after the summer break in about a week’s time, the health department is focusing on the vaccination drive among children under 18 years of age. About 10% of the targeted population under 18 years is yet to get the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine and about 50% have taken the second dose.

In the 12-15 age group, about 90% have taken the first dose and 47% have taken the second dose. In the 15-18 age group, about 90% have taken the first dose and 61% have taken the second dose.

“Most of the children have been getting the vaccination done in school, along with their friends. Parents also avoid bringing children to vaccination centres and prefer school or society camps. This is why vaccination among children has been a bit slow during the last one month due to the summer vacation. With schools resuming, we will restart vaccination camps and hope to achieve full vaccination for children within a month,” said Dr Sunil Dohare, district immunisation officer, Gautam Budh Nagar.

There have been 4,268,000 vaccinations in Gautam Budh Nagar so far, which include 2,300,000 first dose, 1,800,000 second dose and 167,000 precautionary doses.

Against the target set for the district in every age group, Gautam Budh Nagar has achieved 134% first dose and 107% second dose in the adult category, which is highest in Uttar Pradesh. The district has covered the entire population target between 18 and 60 years of age with both doses. However, in the 60+ age group, about 90% have got the first dose while 70% have taken the second dose. Doctors say that the numbers have been stagnant for the past few months, despite making vaccines readily available at all centres and running door-to-door campaigns for the elderly.

It suggests that either the total number of elderly people in the district is fewer than estimated, or they may have moved out or died. The second dose being lower than the first dose could be because many people from neighbouring districts and cities took the first dose in Noida when the vaccine was in short supply, but got the second dose in their home districts.
