“The first and second dose coverage is now complete for children in the 12-15 age group and it has been achieved in a shorter period than other categories after the drive started on March 16. We have achieved 100% target for both the doses, while in the 15-18 age group, we have about 97.11% coverage for the second dose. It is expected that we will achieve 100% coverage in the 15-18 age group in the next 10 days,” said Dr GP Mathuria, nodal officer for Covid-19 vaccination.

The government decided to expand the Covid-19 vaccination programme and directed that children in the 12-15 age group were to be administered Biological E’s Corbevax vaccine.

Official figures indicate that first dose coverage for 18+ category stands at 105.79%, while the second dose coverage is 103.71% as against the target of 2,844,305 beneficiaries.

For the 15-18 age group, the first dose vaccination has already been achieved and the target is about 105.46%, while the second dose coverage is 97.11% against the target of 234,488 beneficiaries.

“We are still operating 60 Covid-19 vaccination centres across the district. The turnout nowadays is less as the infection has very low severity. Still, we are encouraging people to take up both their doses in order to get maximum protection against Covid-19,” Dr Mathuria added.

Experts said that one of the prime reasons for the low severity of infection in present cases is due to higher vaccination coverage in the district.

“It is a prime reason for low severity of infection. It is vital that beneficiaries take up both the doses and also complete their precautionary doses. It will continue to protect them from the infection,” said Dr Ashish Aggarwal, former president of Indian Medical Association’s (IMA) Ghaziabad chapter.

Official figures of the district health department indicate that the Covid-19 positivity rate has been over 1% since June 15.

On the other hand, the total Covid-19 cases in the month of June (first 27 days) stand at 968, which is the highest in the past four months. The months of March, April and May reported 195, 789 and 938 cases respectively. The figure for the month of June includes 49 fresh cases that were reported on Monday.
