Noida: A speeding vehicle allegedly rammed a school van carrying over half a dozen children at Bhatta Golchakkar under Surajpur police station limits of Greater Noida on Tuesday afternoon, police said.
A seven-year-old girl suffered minor injuries in the incident after which she was rushed to a hospital for treatment. Her condition is stable now and police said they are taking necessary action in the matter.
According to the police, a Maruti Eeco was on its way to drop children to their respective homes after school when it was hit by a speeding van.
“There were six to seven children in the vehicle. One girl suffered minor injuries in the incident. Her parents reached the spot and took her to a hospital for treatment. She is stable now,” said Avdhesh Pratap, station house officer (SHO), Surajpur police station.
SHO Pratap added that all other children were safe. He also said that they were able to identify the speeding vehicle from the accounts of bystanders and have also retrieved the vehicle number through CCTV cameras. He added that the erring vehicle was a Maruti Omni.
“We have not yet received any complaint in the matter. Once we receive a complaint, we will investigate the case,” he said.
Officials said that parents have been asked multiple times to avoid informal means of transportation for school children, especially for smaller kids. However, smaller transport vehicles such as vans have been popular for transportation of school children, they added.
“These informal modes of transport are a cause of serious concern and we keep taking action against them. We know these vehicles are convenient and can drop children at their doorstep, but these are not registered as school vehicles and in case of an accident or rash driving, no action can be taken against them by the transport department. However, we can regularly check school buses for any irregularities,” said Siyaram Verma, assistant regional transport officer, Gautam Budh Nagar.
