Political parties are now busy redrawing strategies for civic polls in Gorakhpur.

“Gorakhpur is the CM’s seat and hence while the mayor on the seat has been from the BJP for the last three occasions, our target this time would be to ensure that majority of the corporators belong to the BJP,” a local BJP leader said.

Till now, the city mayor’s post had always been a reserved one. It was reserved for either OBCs or for women till now.

Interestingly, despite BJP holding the mayor post in Gorakhpur municipal corporation, the municipal corporation house was mostly dominated by opposition. “This year with the extension of 10 new wards, strength of municipal corporation board would have 80 corporators, instead of previous 70. The party would try to have its majority in the corporation house now,” a BJP leader said.

Samajwadi Party’s district unit president Birjesh Gautam also held a meeting to discuss the issue with party members before finalising candidates. Gautam said there were 24 contenders for a party ticket for mayor’s post.

District vice president of Congress Tauqeer Alam Khan said there were 8 strong contenders from the party for the mayor’s post and added that the party would decide the name within a couple of days.

Newly appointed regional president of BJP Sadanand Rai said dedication and loyalty for party would decide candidate’s name. He hoped that the party would maintain its winning record.
