The Pune district administration has taken significant steps to reduce the district’s rising number of road accidents, launching a new scheme called District Road Safety Measures. According to the district collector’s office, a separate fund has been set aside for the plan.

The Regional Transport Office (RTO) has been tasked with implementing the plan throughout the district, with input from traffic experts and the traffic mobility committee.

According to the district collectorate, each district has a Road Safety Committee, with the collector serving as the chairman. While measures have been proposed, they have not been as effective due to a lack of separate funds. The new scheme aims to reduce the number of road accidents, which has been increasing in recent years, according to the government.

According to data provided to the district collector by the director general of police, as many as 1,300 fatal accidents were reported in the district, with the highest number of accidents involving two-wheelers and pedestrians in urban areas over the last two years.

Accidents are more common at night and early in the morning.

The RTO will identify accident-prone and congested areas in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, as well as rural areas, and will recommend safety measures to be implemented in these troubled areas.

The government hopes to reduce the number of accidents in the district and make roads safer for everyone by implementing the District Road Safety Measures.

“It is a critical step in the direction of reducing traffic accident-related fatalities in the district,” said district collector Rajesh Deshmukh.

“This project aims to make their lives safer and more secure, and the government is undertaking a number of safety-related initiatives in this regard,” he added.
