Jharkhand infant death: 6 police personnel part of raiding team suspended, booked

The newborn died on Wednesday after a raiding police party entered the home of an accused and allegedly stepped over his four-day-old grandson sleeping inside one of the rooms

Six police personnel including a sub inspector in Jharkhand’s Giridih district were suspended and booked on Thursday, a day after a four-day-old child died after being allegedly trampled by the policemen when they had reached his home looking for his grandfather, who is an accused in an assault case.

Giridih superintendent of police Amit Renu said action has been taken on basis of the complaint filed by the child’s family and an initial magisterial inquiry.

“Six policemen who were part of the raiding party have been suspended. Based on the written complaint filed by the family, an FIR (first information report) has also been registered under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC. The officer in-charge was not at the spot... The investigation in the case will continue. If required, more sections could be added in the FIR and further action will be taken accordingly,” said Renu, adding the autopsy report was awaited.

The newborn died on Wednesday after a raiding police party entered the home of an accused and allegedly stepped over his four-day-old grandson sleeping inside one of the rooms.

The incident occurred in Koshodongo Dighi village in Giridih district at around 3:30am on Wednesday.

The father of the deceased, gave a written complaint alleging his son died as the raiding police party trampled his son who was sleeping on a bed inside.

He also alleged that the family were threatened by the police personnel not to reveal the incident.

Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren had ordered the authorities to conduct a probe on Wednesday.

Besides ordering a magisterial inquiry, the post mortem of the child was done under the watch of a magistrate by the Giridih district authorities, officials said.
