BCCI boss Anurag Thakur slammed: A blow-by-blow account from Supreme Court

At the Supreme Court, Chief Justice of India TS Thakur ripped apart BJP MP and BCCI president Anurag Thakur’s every defence on the matter regarding his request for a ‘letter’ from ICC chairman Shashank Manohar, lambasting the Board president for 10 minutes.

For the first time in three years — since the IPL spot fixing trial began — a Supreme Court judge lambasted BCCI and its president for 10 minutes at a stretch. Chief Justice of India (CJI) TS Thakur grilled Board president Anurag Thakur during the hearing of Lodha Committee’s plea to get BCCI to implement its recommendations at the Supreme Court on Thursday.

In those rasping 10 minutes, CJI Thakur ripped apart BJP MP Anurag Thakur’s every defence on the matter regarding his request for a ‘letter’ from ICC chairman Shashank Manohar. (Chennai Test scorecard)

Court observed that the request was intended to obstruct the implementation of Supreme Court’s July 18 verdict.

“You went to the ICC and said give me a letter saying that there will be government interference if there is any government nominee in the BCCI administration,” remarked Justice Thakur. “You asked a letter from the ICC chairman after this court had already pronounced its verdict. We know your intentions.”

BCCI lawyer Kapil Sibal tried to interject on two or three times but CJI Thakur continued.

“When we pronounce the order, your client has nowhere to go except jail,” CJI Thakur added. “We see it (Anurag Thakur’s letter to ICC) as an obstruction. On this issue, we will pass an order.”

To which, Sibal replied, “I am ready to apologise. There is some misunderstanding.”

“To escape this situation you (Anurag Thakur) should tender an apology. But we will see. We are allowing you to file any document to clear the misunderstanding in a week.” CJI Thakur said.

Earlier, CJI Thakur asked Amicus Curiae, Gopal Subramaniam, on two occasions whether Thakur committed perjury or is there a case of prosecution!

“Yes,” Gopal Subramaniam replied on both occasions. “Anurag Thakur’s requested for a letter from Manohar in the capacity of ICC chairman twice, which he refused.”

Amicus Curiae read out a letter sent to the court by the ICC chairman which clearly said Anurag Thakur made the request twice.

According to the letter, Manohar told Anurag that the Indian Apex Court has already pronounced its verdict. Following that, Manohar refused to write any letter in favour of the BCCI.

Manohar also mentioned the name of the ICC board of directors as witnesses who were present at the August 6 and 7 Dubai meeting where Anurag made the ‘letter’ request.

In its July 18 verdict, a Supreme Court bench of CJI TS Thakur and Justice FMI Kalifulla had asked the Board to appoint a representative of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) in its apex council. The BCCI wanted to portray that this order could be seen by the ICC as government interference.
