India squad announcement for Australia ODIs Highlights: KL Rahul will be seen leading the Indian unit in the first two ODIs against Australia, which gets underway from September 22. Meanwhile, R Ashwin returns to the ODI set-up and will be with the team for all the three encounters. The suspense over Axar Patel's fitness continues despite him being named for the third and final ODI. BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar “hoped” that the all-rounder to  be fit till then. Axar sustained an injury during the Super 4 encounter against Bangladesh, which was a dead rubber. Washington Sundar was then inducted in the Asia Cup squad as a last minute replacement for the all-rounder. He is also part of the ODI series.

Ruturaj Gaikwad has also been named for the first two ODIs and will most probably operate in the opening slot alongside Shubman Gill. Ishan Kishan. who has rather been preferred in the middle-order, should ideally continue at the number 4 or 5 position.

If we look at recent performances, Mohammed Siraj produced a phenomenal show in the Asia Cup final on Sunday as Rohit and Co. demolished Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in Colombo. It was India's 8th Asia Cup title and the team will now look to carry forward the momentum in the 50-over encounters against Australia, after which they engage in two warm-up matches before proceeding to the World Cup.

Australia, on the other hand, head into the series after 3-2 drubbing against South Africa. Australia had announced an 18-member squad for the three ODIs on Sunday as key players return after recovering from their respective injuries.

Both India and Australia are among the favourites to win the World Cup, which gets underway from next month. Catch the highlights of India's squad announcement for Australia ODIs:

Sharing his thoughts on Star Sports, the official broadcaster of Asia Cup said: “There are different venues and traveling in India… it takes a day (between every match). You need to preserve energy before the World Cup. I don't know why they are playing three ODIs. It is probably done a long time ago, but it was a bit unnecessary. You don't want to be tired before a mega-tournament where you are favourites at home. If you want some more players in the squad, you can play those in the three ODIs against Australia.”
