The Justice Mukul Mudgal committee is finding it difficult to rope in a former cricketer of repute to assist it in the ongoing investigation into the fixing scandal in IPL 6. It was learnt that the committee wants a former captain who has played in recent years. The Committee has zeroed in on a few names but most of them are associated to the cricket board in some way or the other.

Mudgal, however, told HT: “We have not finalised a name yet as we don’t require him at this stage of the investigation. But we will certainly let you know.”

One of the committee members told HT that Sourav Ganguly was the first choice but the former India skipper has some contractual obligations and it is not easy for him to get on board. Some other names were also being considered but most of them are working for BCCI, IPL or the state cricket associations in some capacity.

Ganguly, who led in 49 Tests, denied any knowledge of being considered for the job when HT contacted him over phone. “I have no idea about this. I am hearing it from you. No one has contacted me so far. I can’t say anything about it,” Ganguly, had said from London. Ganguly has also played in the IPL and so fitted the committee’s requirement perfectly.

SC instructions
Last month, the Supreme Court instructed the Mudgal Committee to investigate the contents of the sealed envelope that contains the names of 13 players and officials suspected to be involved in the fixing scandal. The list includes the name of sidelined BCCI president N. Srinivasan.

Mudgal was in Chennai last week to meet Tamil Nadu Police seeking its suggestion on who could be the officer of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) rank to join the investigating team. Delhi Police has already zeroed in on an ACP-ranked officer from its Special Cell. Mudgal will meet the Mumbai Police soon for the same purpose.
