'Nobody retained him in IPL. That's how well he has done': Ex-England captain brutally destroys Aaron Finch

Mar 24, 2023 12:03 PM IST

Former Australia captain Aaron Finch played for nine franchises in the Indian Premier League.

The fan-wars have already begun as the 2023 Indian Premier League begins on March 31. Even the experts have joined in on the banter, as the biggest cricketing league in the world takes off with the iconic clash between defending champions Gujarat Titans and Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings next week. Earlier this week, the official television broadcasters of the league – Star Sports – posted a video featuring former cricketers Paul Collingwood and Aaron Finch, as they discussed the IPL 2023.

Finch has played for nine franchises in his IPL career, and the former Aussie cricketer was asked to name all the teams he has represented in chronological order. And while Finch did succeed in doing that, Collingwood had a savage response as he took a brutal dig at the former Australia captain.

“The amazing thing is, nobody retained him. That's how well he has done,” Collingwood said, as he burst into a chuckle. Even Finch couldn't resist breaking into laughter at the former England captain's remark as he said, “I know, I know.”

Finch had begun his IPL career in 2010 with Rajasthan Royals, and then joined the Delhi franchise (then Delhi Capitals) in 2011, where he spent two years. His time with Delhi was the joint-most he spent with any franchise in the tournament, Finch represented Pune Warriors India in 2013, and was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2014. The next year, he joined Mumbai Indians before spending another two years at Gujarat Lions.

After a single season with Punjab in 2018, Finch played for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2020 before ending his IPL career with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2022.

Finch announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket in February 2023; he led Australia to 2021 T20 World Cup victory, and also lifted the ODI World Cup with the side in 2015.
