Scott Boland

Age 35AustraliaAUSTRALIA
Right-arm fast medium Bowler

Scott Michael Boland, born in Mordialloc, Melbourne, has carved a unique path in Australian cricket with his extraordinary consistency and sharp accuracy as a right-arm fast-medium bowler. Representing Victoria and the Melbourne Stars in domestic cricket, Boland’s career boasts several remarkable milestones, including being named Cricket Australia's Sheffield Shield Player of the Year in 2019.

Boland holds a special place in Australian cricket history as one of the few Indigenous Australians to play at the highest level. He is only the second Aboriginal male to represent Australia in Test cricket, following Jason Gillespie. This significant aspect of his heritage emerged in 2017 when Boland's family discovered their connection to the Gulidjan tribe of Victoria. Since then, he has actively embraced his roots, participating in Indigenous cricket programs and representing Australia in Indigenous teams.

His cricketing journey began at Parkdale Cricket Club, where he started playing at the age of six. He later joined Frankston Peninsula, where he honed his bowling skills, eventually earning a rookie contract with Victoria after an impressive 2010/11 season, taking 33 wickets at an average of 25.3. Over the years, Boland’s standout performances in the Sheffield Shield, including his career-best 7/31 against Western Australia and a stellar 2018/19 season with 48 wickets at an average of 19.66, solidified his reputation as a top domestic bowler and paved the way for his entry into international cricket.

Boland made his ODI debut for Australia on January 12, 2016, against India, though his first outing proved challenging, conceding 0/74. Despite early setbacks, he showcased his skill in high-pressure situations, particularly during the death overs, and continued to represent Australia in limited-overs formats throughout 2016. His T20 career-best figures of 3/26 against Sri Lanka further highlighted his potential.

However, Test cricket marked the turning point of his career. Boland made his Test debut during the 2021/22 Ashes series and delivered one of the most memorable performances in Australian cricket history. At the Melbourne Cricket Ground, he took 6/7 in England’s second innings, securing a decisive victory for Australia and earning the prestigious Mullagh Medal. Boland concluded the series with 18 wickets at an extraordinary average of 9.55, cementing his place as a key player in the Test lineup.

In June 2023, Boland played a critical role in Australia’s triumph in the ICC World Test Championship final against India. His impactful spells in both innings, including the prized wickets of Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli, helped seal a historic win. Later that year, during the Ashes in England, he continued to shine, contributing with both ball and bat, achieving his highest Test score of 20 during the first Test's fourth innings.

Off the field, Boland has been a passionate advocate for Indigenous representation in cricket. He was part of the Aboriginal XI’s historic 2018 tour of England, celebrating 150 years since the first Australian sports team toured overseas. His contributions to promoting Indigenous cricket have earned him recognition, including being named the Taverners Australia Indigenous Cricketer of the Year. Scott Boland’s journey is one of perseverance, skill, and cultural significance.
